Recently, a friend of mine asked me what colour I think she is. She’s a cute girl. Sarcastic, funny and expressive. The colour that comes to mind when I look at her is grey. A soft and pretty grey. It’s a beautiful colour, but I felt that she wasn’t satisfied with being called “grey”. And I think it’s because of the mildly negative connotations we associate with the colour grey. When it came up again, she told me that me calling her grey was the worst thing anyone’s ever said to her. An exaggeration, I know. But I replied to her with something along the lines of:
I think the colour grey gets such a bad rep in colloquial language. We need to rewrite this narrative. Grey is such a pretty, neutral and calming colour.
It represents the gloomy days when you huddle in blankets, drink hot chocolate and stay in bed watching shows all day. It represents a sense of solitude and quiet which doesn’t always have to be negative. It’s the perfect medley between the light and the dark. Simply put, it’s a comforting colour. It’s not too warm, like some of the yellows and it’s not too cold like some of the blues. It’s somewhere in the middle. Just right, quite perfect.
And it’s such a misunderstood colour. It’s not drab, boring or sad. It’s just plain beautiful.
She was unconvinced. But what do you think?
